Now, there's so much to be said on teaching Literature in a way that promotes personal growth. It is really painful to see how the teaching of Literature, if done in the mechanistic and directive way it more often than not is, harms young people at an age that 'obtaining good grades' is presented (oh, how disastrously!) as co-terminal with 'repeating acquired wisdom'.
